Motorists who let their vehicle registration lapse will now receive an SMS reminder, under a new NSW Government initiative aimed at improving road safety and reducing accidental unregistered driving.

The new text message will be sent the day after a vehicle’s registration expires, reminding motorists to renew before driving. Last year, more than 50,000 people across NSW were fined for driving unregistered and uninsured vehicles.

The SMS reminder is an addition to existing digital registration alerts available through Service NSW. Almost one million motorists already receive notifications via email, the Service NSW app and their MyServiceNSW inbox before their registration expires.

Minster for Roads Jenny Aitchison said it’s an easy mistake, but one that can be costly.

“We understand that people are busy and it’s easy for rego renewal to slip down the to-do list, but the consequences of missing it can be serious,” she said,

“Driving unregistered doesn’t just risk a fine, it means being uninsured and putting yourself and others at risk on our roads.”

Drivers must opt in to receive digital reminders. Those who do not sign up will continue to receive a paper reminder in the mail around six weeks before their registration is due.
