The Muswellbrook greyhound racing track is still set to close at the end of the month, with Upper Hunter MP and Shadow Minister for Racing Dave Layzell saying efforts to reverse the decision have so far been unsuccessful.
Layzell said he had held a number of meetings with Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) in a bid to save the facility, but the outlook remained bleak. He said the track had already been physically demolished and its equipment relocated to other venues across the state.
“We’ve had a number of meetings with Greyhounds New South Wales trying to reverse that terrible decision and at this stage it does not look good,” Layzell said.
“We are continuing the work with Greyhounds New South Wales to create a new future for that site in some way.”
There has been discussion about the possibility of a greyhound rehabilitation facility being established on the current site, though Layzell said the proposal lacked council support and no formal plan had yet been put forward by GRNSW.
The Muswellbrook track received a $1.2 million upgrade in 2023, but has been deemed surpluss to requirements under a GRNSW re-model, with Maitland the preferred track for the Hunter region.
