Muswellbrook Shire Council will receive $145,000 to develop new ways of managing hard‑to‑recycle waste, as part of a major funding announcement by the NSW Environment Protection Authority.

The funding forms part of the fourth round of the Local Government Waste Solutions Fund, which will see more than $2.3 million shared between ten council‑led projects across the state. The program is designed to support innovative, circular economy initiatives that reduce reliance on landfill.

Muswellbrook’s project, titled Circular Solutions Accelerator – Unlocking Local Innovation for Organic and HDPE Waste, aims to improve how organic material and plastics are reused locally. The Hunter Joint Organisation has also secured $298,892 to deliver a regional Circular Materials Data Project.

NSW EPA Executive Director of Engagement, Digital and Innovation Alexandra Geddes said councils are at the forefront of tackling some of the state’s most challenging waste issues.

“From devices to scan for batteries in trucks, to turning shredded mattresses into pavers, we’re supporting innovative ideas that will increase reuse and change the way we manage our waste,” she said.

The fund is delivered under the State Government’s Waste and Sustainable Materials Strategy and has now provided more than $9 million to support 44 projects across NSW.
