Man charged over fatal Greta crash

A man has been charged over a fatal crash near Greta on Monday, which claimed the life of a 75-year-old woman.

Emergency services were called to the New England Highway at Harpers Hill about 8.50am on Monday following reports a hatchback and utility had crashed head-on, blocking both directions of traffic. The 75-year-old driver of the hatchback was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics but could not be revived.

The driver of the utility, a 21-year-old man, allegedly left the scene on foot before being arrested nearby a short time later. He was taken to John Hunter Hospital for assessment and mandatory testing.

A crime scene was established by officers attached to Port Stephens-Hunter Police District, with the Crash Investigation Unit forensically examining the scene.

Police attended the hospital on Tuesday afternoon and spoke with the driver, who was subsequently charged with five offences: dangerous driving occasioning death, negligent driving occasioning death, negligent driving with no death or grievous bodily harm, failing to stop and assist after a vehicle impact causing death, and not keeping left of the dividing line.
