Construction has commenced on a major upgrade of Thomas Mitchell Drive in Muswellbrook, as part of Muswellbrook Shire Council’s ongoing investment to improve the safety, reliability and longevity of the local road network.
The Stage 4B project will upgrade approximately 1.3 kilometres of Thomas Mitchell Drive, extending past the intersection with Denman Road. The works are expected to be complete by late May 2027, weather permitting, and will be delivered by council’s appointed contractor, KCE Pty Ltd.
Council’s Director of Infrastructure and Property, Matthew Lysaught, said the upgrade would deliver long-term benefits for the many people who rely on the road every day.
“Thomas Mitchell Drive is an important transport route for residents, local businesses, heavy vehicles and workers travelling to and from local industry, including mining operations,” Mr Lysaught said.
“Given the high-volume traffic using Thomas Mitchell Drive, including heavy vehicles servicing local industry, this investment will deliver lasting benefits by improving safety, durability and reliability for all road users.”
The works include widening the road formation, pavement rehabilitation using lime stabilisation, a new base course overlay, stormwater drainage improvements and a fresh bitumen seal. During construction, the affected section will operate under traffic control, with road users urged to allow extra travel time and follow all signage.
The project has a total construction value of approximately 4.6 million dollars, funded through a combination of Federal Government grants, including the Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program and Roads to Recovery allocation, along with council’s Mine Affected Road Reserve and Road Reserve funding.
Council has thanked residents, businesses and road users for their patience while the improvements are carried out.
