Work has begun on major safety upgrades to the Golden Highway at Merriwa, with a new westbound overtaking lane now under construction.

The $27.3 million project targets one of NSW’s key freight routes, improving safety and reliability for local motorists and heavy vehicle operators. The highway is a critical east‑west link between Newcastle and Dubbo, and plays an important role in supporting the Upper Hunter economy.

NSW Minister for the Hunter Yasmin Catley said the road is vital to regional communities and industry.

“From coal, grain, livestock, fertiliser and other goods, this stretch of road is part and parcel of the Hunter’s booming economy,” she said.

“This new overtaking lane will help locals and freight operators move more safely and reliably across the region at a time when demand on this road continues to grow.”

Construction is expected to take around ten months, weather permitting.
