A new trial rolling out across regional NSW aims to improve access to education, training and employment for transport‑disadvantaged people.
Under the initiative, Transport for NSW will fund 16 community transport providers to expand eligibility beyond current users, including seniors and people with accessibility needs. The trial will support people with limited or no access to private or public transport who need to attend face‑to‑face study at TAFE NSW or a Registered Training Organisation, or travel to work as an apprentice or trainee.
Transcare Community Transport will operate the trial in Muswellbrook and the Upoer Hunter LGA’s, while Northern Coalfields Community Care will operate in Cessnock. Linked Community Services will oerate in MidCoast, Port Macquarie-Hastings, and Port Stephens.
Transport for NSW’s Anthony Hayes said transport remains one of the biggest barriers for people in regional communities.
“This trial is a valuable test‑and‑learn opportunity, helping us understand how community transport can better connect more people to education and employment, while continuing to support those who already rely on these services today,” he said.
“By extending community transport to support access to training, apprenticeships and further education, the trial could open new pathways for people and help them build new skills and secure long‑term employment.”
The trial will be tailored to local community needs and delivered by trusted local organisations. It will be closely monitored, with feedback from customers and providers informing future options. The time‑limited trial will run until 30 June 2027, with start dates varying across regions.
