Upper Hunter Council is calling on residents to stop illegally dumping rubbish in the local countryside, after whitegoods were recently found dumped near Aberdeen.
Council says the dumping is disappointing, particularly as many of the items involved could have been disposed of free of charge at its waste facilities. Scrap metal, including whitegoods, can be dropped off at no cost, along with electronic waste, cardboard, gas bottles, batteries, light globes and motor oil. Bottles and cans can be taken to a Return and Earn point, and Council provides one free disposal day each year for mattresses and tyres.
Council says illegal dumping damages the environment, creates hazards for the community and adds to the cost of clean-up borne by ratepayers. Anyone caught dumping waste illegally may face significant fines as well as clean-up costs.
