Muswellbrook Shire Council is offering local high school students the chance to start their careers early, launching a school-based apprenticeship and traineeship program in partnership with Muswellbrook High School and Merriwa Central School.

Students in years 10, 11 and 12 will be able to combine paid work and formal training in roles with council while continuing to study for their HSC. Mayor Jeff Drayton says the program is a genuine traineeship, not just work experience.

“It is paid work. They’re training, but it is a genuine SBAT traineeship, so they do get paid for the work they do while still studying,” he said.

Council expects to host between six and eight students, with the program set to begin soon.

Students interested in the program are encouraged to speak with their school or visit the Muswellbrook Shire Council website for more information.
