Muswellbrook Shire residents may find their bins are given a closer look this month, with Council conducting a kerbside waste audit across the Shire throughout June.

Council has engaged an independent Waste Audit Consultant to carry out a bin-by-bin assessment of household red, yellow and green bins. Properties are being selected at random, and residents are not required to do anything differently.

If a property is selected, the consultant will collect a sample of waste from the bin prior to collection. The contents will be placed into a bag and taken to a sorting facility for analysis.

The audit is designed to help Council better understand what materials are being disposed of in household bins. The information gathered will be used to improve waste education programs, inform future waste strategies and contribute to state-wide waste planning.

Council and the consultant have strict privacy protocols in place. No names, addresses or identifying details are attached to waste samples, and all audit staff are subject to confidentiality requirements.

Those who wish to opt out of the audit can contact Muswellbrook Shire Council by calling 02 6549 3700 or emailing council@muswellbrook.nsw.gov.au.
