Year 11 students from St Joseph’s Catholic College, Aberdeen, have gained a firsthand look at how laws are made during a visit to NSW Parliament House in Sydney.
The excursion took place yesterday as part of the Parliament of NSW Legal Studies and the Legislature education program, which supports the Stage 6 Legal Studies curriculum by linking classroom learning with real‑world experience.
Students toured both the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council chambers, observing how debate and decision‑making occur within state government.
Upper Hunter MP Dave Layzell said the visit highlighted the importance of engaging young people in democracy.
“It’s fantastic the students can come down here to their State Parliament and understand that there is a place where things are debated of interest to them and that there is a wider group of people who are working for their best interests,” he said.
The visit was supported by the Parliament’s Regional Travel Subsidy, which helps reduce costs for regional schools and was recently increased to $500 to make the program more accessible for regional communities.
