The Transport Workers’ Union and major trucking industry groups have jointly called on the Federal Government to amend the Fair Work Act, warning surging fuel prices pose an immediate risk to transport businesses and national supply chains.

The call comes from the TWU, the Australian Road Transport Industrial Organisation, the Australian Trucking Association and the National Road Freighters’ Association. They want the Fair Work Commission given the ability to urgently intervene during emergencies affecting the transport sector.

Industry groups say fuel costs have risen sharply, leaving many trucking operators unable to pass those costs on to large clients such as retailers, manufacturers and mining companies. They argue emergency powers would allow the commission to require transport clients to quickly increase payments to cover fuel spikes.

The industry also warns the financial strain is affecting road safety, with operators under pressure to rush jobs and delay vehicle maintenance. This year, 30 people have already died in truck crashes across Australia, including nine truck drivers, while transport company liquidations are reported to be up nearly 50 per cent.

Some major clients, including Coles and Woolworths, have already taken interim measures to address fuel price pressures following Fair Work Commission proceedings.
