Muswellbrook Shire Council has welcomed the NSW Government’s decision to include the proposed AGL Hunter Energy Hub in the State’s new Investment Delivery Authority, saying the move will accelerate investment and job opportunities in the region. The authority has been created to improve coordination between government agencies and help advance high‑value energy and infrastructure projects.

Mayor Jeff Drayton said the announcement recognises the critical role of the Upper Hunter as NSW transitions its energy sector and works to secure new industries.

“Anything that helps streamline and fast‑track major investment projects in Muswellbrook will help deliver jobs, attract industry and support the Hunter Region as we manage significant economic change,” he said.

The Hunter Energy Hub aims to repurpose the former Liddell Power Station site, creating a new energy and industrial precinct within the shire. Council says the project is particularly important with several major local assets set to close in coming years, including BHP’s Mt Arthur Coal Mine in 2030 and the eventual retirement of Bayswater Power Station.

Mayor Drayton said having the Liddell project supported through the Investment Delivery Authority reflects a growing recognition that coordination challenges between agencies have historically delayed major developments.

“The State Government should be applauded for establishing the Investment Delivery Authority and recognising the importance of the AGL Energy Hub by providing this support,” he said.

Council also noted the broader economic pressures expected from multiple industry transitions across the Hunter and said further Federal Government support would be welcomed to help bring the project to fruition.

The AGL Hunter Energy Hub is one of several major projects across NSW to be supported through the new authority.
