Critical cladding remediation works at Calvary Mater Newcastle will begin in March, following intervention from the NSW Government to fast‑track overdue repairs.
NSW Health has appointed a contractor to replace the non‑compliant cladding on the hospital’s external façade. The material has been found to breach building codes and has contributed to water leaks in parts of the facility, which is linked to ongoing mould issues. The remediation project is expected to be completed by mid‑2027.
The works had been repeatedly delayed due to stalled commercial negotiations with Novacare, which provides facilities management services at the hospital. NSW Health issued multiple breach notices and ultimately exercised its rights to proceed without further delay.
“We said we would step in and take action at Calvary Mater Newcastle, and that is exactly what we are doing,” said Minister for Health Ryan Park.
“A contractor has now been engaged, and cladding works are scheduled to begin within weeks, ensuring long‑overdue remediation can now move ahead without further delay.
“We will continue working closely with the Calvary Mater Newcastle team to minimise disruption and ensure patients and staff remain our top priority throughout the process.”
