Warm and humid weather has led to a spike in funnel‑web spider activity across the Hunter, with residents reporting sightings in gardens, garages and even inside homes.

The species is considered one of the world’s most dangerous spiders, and experts warn they can pose a serious risk to children and pets. Locals are being urged not to handle the spiders directly and to keep shoes, towels and outdoor gear off the ground where possible.

The Australian Reptile Park is again reminding residents it accepts live funnel‑webs for its antivenom program. The Park provides detailed instructions on its website on how to safely capture a spider using a glass jar and stiff piece of cardboard while keeping a safe distance.

Staff say the antivenom program relies on community donations and has saved countless lives across Australia.

Anyone bitten by a funnel‑web spider should seek emergency medical help immediately.
