Ratepayers to be slugged if they want more bin space

An extra $330-odd dollars.

That’s how much Muswellbrook Shire ratepayers will be forced to pay if they want to upgrade the size of their red garbage bin.

The council overnight voted 8-4 to impose the fee on those who need more space with the weekly kerbside collection moving to fortnightly from July.

The move is part of the introduction of a Food and Organics or FOGO waste kerbside collection service.

An attempt by four Councillors to allow residents to apply for more bin space and stay with weekly collections because of the size of their household has been defeated.

The majority of Councillors supported a motion to charge ratepayers, who apply, while Jeff Drayton, Deanne Douglus, Mark Bowditch and Rohit Mahajan were against.
