A Muswellbrook woman is staging a one-person protest outside the entrance to a local coal mine in the hope of pressuring the owner into making her a reasonable compensation offer.
Nicky Redgrove has not been able to work since she was struck by a mass of mud and rocks that fell from the top of an eight-metre-high heavy dump truck while she was re-fuelling at BHP’s Mount Arthur operation over five years ago.
At the time she was employed by one of BHP’s on-site contractors.
She’s been holding a sign that reads “injured worker left out in the cold” for eight hours each day this week.
“I’ve been receiving great support from my colleagues as they enter and exit the mine,” she said.
Nicky told the iHeart Upper Hunter local news podcast said the workplace accident changed her life forever.
“I have permanent severe nerve damage and partial incapacitation after a rock struck my head, neck and right shoulder in March 2019.
“I just want BHP to step up and look after me properly. It was a freak accident but I did nothing wrong. I deserve to go to work and go home safely at the end of each day.”
