Muswellbrook is one step closer to having a modern regional sports hub after Muswellbrook Shire Council accepted a $10 million construction tender for the redevelopment of Olympic Park. The decision marks a major milestone in Council’s long-term plan to transform the Wilkinson Avenue precinct into a venue capable of hosting NRL trials, major carnivals and large community events.

The tendered works include refurbishing and extending the grandstand with new spectator seating, multiple universal change rooms, toilets and player amenities. The redevelopment will also deliver media and coaches’ boxes, function spaces and event infrastructure to meet regional venue standards.

Other upgrades include improvements to the playing surface, irrigation systems and precinct landscaping. Demolition works are expected to begin mid-year once final design and certification are complete, with construction to be staged where possible to reduce disruption for users and nearby residents.

Mayor Jeff Drayton said the project represents years of planning and collaboration with local sporting clubs and residents.

“Olympic Park holds great memories for a lot of people in Muswellbrook, and we know that increasing demand, ageing amenities and increasing standards for venues mean we need to upgrade this precinct for our community,” he said.

Already one of the Shire’s busiest facilities, Olympic Park hosts rugby league, touch football, school sport and community gatherings throughout the year. Council says the redevelopment will cement it as the centrepiece of Muswellbrook’s sporting infrastructure.
