Demolition of the Liddell Power Station chimney stacks is planned for Tuesday 26 May, weather permitting, marking a significant moment for the Upper Hunter community.
AGL says there will be no public viewing areas on the day, in line with advice from emergency services and regulators, with roads surrounding the power station closed for a period. Information on road closures will be available through the Live Traffic NSW website.
To meet community interest safely, the demolition will be live‑streamed via AGL’s YouTube channel, with links provided through the AGL website. A live viewing event will also be held at the Muswellbrook RSL, with invitations extended to former employees and key community partners.
AGL General Manager Brad Williams says the demolition is a bittersweet milestone for the region.
“These stacks have been an absolute icon for the community and the region over decades, particularly for our employees, and seeing them come down is going to be a significant milestone for the community,” he said.
Mr Williams says the demolition also represents progress toward the site’s future as an industrial energy hub, including work on a 500‑megawatt, two‑hour battery currently being commissioned.
