Twister or Tornado? Wild Weather Stuns Locals
One minute, on 10 September 2025 in NSW, it was just another stormy Tuesday, then outta nowhere, a twister was tearing through paddocks near Young, tossing sheds and shocking locals.

Across the Riverina and South West Slopes, two rare tornadoes touched down, caught on camera as wild weather rolled through. It was fast, loud, and totally unexpected.
Tornado Near Young Caught on Camera
At around 3:30pm, fire tower footage captured a clearly defined tornado swirling near Tubbul, northwest of Young. The Bureau of Meteorology issued a tornado warning shortly after, covering a wide stretch of central and southern NSW, including the Riverina, Central Tablelands, and South West Slopes. It warned of “very dangerous thunderstorms likely to produce tornadoes, large hailstones and destructive winds.”
Thankfully, the warning was cancelled within the hour, with no injuries or major damage reported in the area.
Caragabal Twister Leaves Locals Stunned
A second, more intense tornado was filmed near Caragabal, about 80 km north of Temora. Local farmer Neil Davies captured close-range video showing the twister tearing through farmland, lifting debris and flattening sheds. Meteorologists say it’s some of the clearest tornado footage ever seen in Australia.
Storms Part of Larger Weather System
The tornadoes were part of a broader low-pressure system that brought hail, heavy rain, and damaging winds across NSW, with emergency services responding to dozens of incidents.

While tornadoes are rare in Australia, they can and do occur, especially during spring. Authorities are urging residents to stay vigilant and prepared.
