A woman has died following a crash in the Hunter which is now the subject of a critical incident investigation.
About 10.45am on Friday 3rd October, police attempted to stop a vehicle on Buchanan Road, Buchanan.
Police say the vehicle is believed to have briefly stopped before leaving the scene. A short time later, it crashed into a telegraph pole on the same road and caught fire.
The female driver and sole occupant of the vehicle died at the scene. While she is yet to be formally identified, she is believed to be aged in her 30s.
A crime scene was established, and a critical incident team from Newcastle City Police District has been tasked with investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The investigation will be independently reviewed by the Professional Standards Command, with oversight from the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
