A small earthquake has shaken parts of the Singleton shire, with the 2.5‑magnitude tremor recorded just before 4am today (Thursday Feburary 4, 2026). Geoscience data shows the quake struck on the north‑western edge of the Mount Thorley Warkworth mine at a depth of around three kilometres.
The tremor was detected by seismic monitoring stations across New South Wales, including as far south as Canberra. Despite the wide detection, there have been no immediate reports of damage across the Singleton region.
Minor earthquakes are not uncommon in the Hunter, particularly around mining areas where natural seismic activity and industrial factors can coincide. Authorities will continue to monitor for any aftershocks, though none have been reported so far.
Residents who felt the tremor can submit reports to national monitoring agencies to help improve data accuracy.
