Singleton Council’s annual bulk waste collection will return from 2 November to 11 December, with households urged to consider reuse and recycling options before sending items to the kerb.

The six-week service gives households that receive a domestic waste and recycling collection one free kerbside pick-up of bulky household items. Collections move through the shire area by area, with Singleton, Redbournberry, Fern Gully and Combo first from 2 November, followed by Darlington, Dunolly and Singleton Heights from 9 November. The final week, from 7 December, covers Broke, Bulga, Jerrys Plains, Lemington, Warkworth and other outlying areas. The full schedule is on Council’s website.

Residents can place up to 2 cubic metres of domestic waste on the kerb, separated into piles of general waste and scrap metal and whitegoods, in the week before their scheduled collection. Loose rubbish must be bagged or boxed, and individual items must be under 40 kilograms, less than 1.5 metres long and able to be safely loaded by two adults.

Acting General Manager Mel Curtis said a spring clean did not have to mean sending unwanted items straight to landfill.

“Think about whether furniture, bikes, toys or homewares could be donated to charity, sold or passed on to someone else,” Mrs Curtis said. Council is also supporting the Garage Sale Trail in Singleton over the weekends of 7 and 8 November and 14 and 15 November.

Mrs Curtis asked residents not to put waste out early, saying rangers would be patrolling and items placed outside the designated timeframe, or that do not meet the requirements, may be considered illegal dumping and attract a fine. She said contractors may occasionally run into the following week, and asked for patience.

Mattresses are not accepted in the collection, but residents can drop off up to four for free at the Singleton Waste Management Facility during Council’s Mattress Muster on Saturday 21 November from 9am to 1pm. Electronic waste, paints, oils, batteries and fluorescent globes can be taken free to the Community Recycling Centre at the same facility.
