School child airlifted after car‑pedestrian crash in Muswellbrook

A nine‑year‑old boy has been airlifted to hospital after being struck by a car in Muswellbrook earlier this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Maitland Street and Rutherford Road at about 3:40pm following reports of a car colliding with a pedestrian. Police say the child had been crossing Rutherford Road when he was hit by a vehicle driven by a 17‑year‑old P‑plate driver turning west from Maitland Street.

The boy was treated at the scene before being taken to Muswellbrook Hospital by ambulance. He was later airlifted to the John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle as a precaution. He is in a stable condition with non‑life‑threatening injuries.

The driver was not physically injured. Police have begun inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
