A provisional P2 driver has been suspended from driving after being caught speeding on a back road near Muswellbrook.

Police say the driver was detected travelling at 128 kilometres an hour in an 80 kilometre zone on Kayuga Road on Monday by officers from the Hunter Valley Highway Patrol.

The driver was issued a $3,054 fine for driving more than 45 kilometres an hour over the speed limit, along with an additional $330 fine for failing to display P plates. Their licence was suspended for six months.

Police say the driver told officers they were late for work and had used the back road in an attempt to get to their destination faster and avoid traffic.

Officers are using the incident to remind motorists that rural and back roads are regularly patrolled and that speeding significantly increases the risk of serious crashes.

Police are urging drivers to make safer choices, slow down and consider that arriving late is far better than not arriving at all.
