The use of filter self-rescuers in underground mines has been placed under the spotlight, with NSW Resources seeking feedback on whether the devices remain fit for purpose.

Filter self-rescuers, known as FSRs, are a type of respirator carried by underground mine workers to help them self-escape during emergencies involving smoke and carbon monoxide. NSW Resources is now asking whether FSRs remain an appropriate and sufficient self-rescue device, or whether alternative options could provide improved safety outcomes.

A newly released discussion paper examines the limitations of FSRs, including the fact they do not function in oxygen-deficient or toxic atmospheres. The paper also explores alternative self-rescue technologies, such as self-contained self-rescuers and compressed air breathing apparatus, which can offer protection in a wider range of emergency conditions.
