Work on the long-awaited Muswellbrook Bypass could begin ahead of schedule, with Transport for NSW advising the project is progressing faster than expected.

Muswellbrook Mayor Jeff Drayton said the latest updates from the department suggest the long-discussed bypass may begin within months, not years.

“They report the Muswellbrook Bypass is going well — maybe even a bit ahead of schedule,” Mayor Drayton said.

The Mayor said Council is now focused on preparing for the changes the bypass will bring, including traffic management, small business consultation, and main street improvements.

“There’ll be thorough consultation with businesses that might be affected, and we’re forming an advisory group made up of local business people and community members to guide that process,” Mayor Drayton said.

He acknowledged some residents and traders may have mixed feelings, but said overall the bypass would deliver major benefits for the township.

“One of the clear advantages will be taking heavy vehicles and oversize loads out of the main street — it’ll make the town safer and more accessible,” he said.

The project is expected to take around two years to complete once construction begins, with Council also looking to align its main street beautification plans with the bypass timeline.

“This is the most positive news we’ve had in a long time,” Mayor Drayton said.

“It’s a reality now — and we’ll make sure Muswellbrook benefits as much as possible.”
