Man charged after elderly pedestrian struck in Singleton Heights

A man has been charged after an elderly man was allegedly hit and dragged by a car in Singleton Heights on Sunday.

Emergency services were called to Blaxland Avenue around 11:30am following reports of a serious incident in the front yard of a home. Police say the victim sustained suspected spinal fractures, a head injury and severe lacerations after an argument with the driver escalated.

The man was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to John Hunter Hospital in a critical but stable condition.

A 44-year-old man was arrested shortly after midday and underwent mandatory testing at Singleton Hospital before being charged at Cessnock Police Station. He faces five offences, including causing grievous bodily harm with intent and dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm.

The man was refused bail in court yesterday and is due to reappear at Newcastle Local Court on March 18. Police are appealing for anyone with information or dash cam footage from the Singleton Heights area to contact Cessnock Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
