Bookings opened yesterday for the National Gun Buyback Scheme in NSW, with the State Government describing it as the biggest firearms buyback in a generation.

Eligible licence holders can book through the Gun Safe portal to surrender surplus and reclassified firearms and ammunition in return for compensation under a fixed price schedule. Walk-ins will not be accepted at police stations. The scheme will open on Monday 2 November and run for 12 months.

Surrenders will begin at Sutherland, Penrith, Narellan, Grafton, Griffith and Dubbo police stations. A further 34 stations will join on Tuesday 1 December, including Belmont and Waratah in the Hunter, as well as Gosford and Wyong on the Central Coast. Maitland, Raymond Terrace, Cessnock and Muswellbrook stations will start taking surrenders from Monday 18 January 2027. Bookings for all participating stations open on 24 November.

The scheme follows the Bondi Beach terror attack, in which 15 people were killed.

Minister for Police and Counter-terrorism Yasmin Catley said fewer guns in the community meant a safer community.

“It means fewer guns at risk to fall into the wrong hands. It’s that simple,” she said.
