Mining giant Glencore contributed an estimated $7 billion to the New South Wales economy in 2025, according to its annual economic contribution report produced by PwC.

The report details the scale of the company’s footprint across the state, including jobs for 6,540 employees and contractors, $4.57 billion spent on goods and services, $1.15 billion in wages and salaries, and $1.32 billion paid in taxes, royalties and rates to federal, state and local governments. The company also supported 2,940 Australian-based businesses during the year.

Glencore’s Australian coal business is headquartered in the Hunter region, and the company says $2.5 billion of its goods and services spending went directly to regional NSW businesses, including those in Muswellbrook, Singleton, Cessnock, Maitland and Newcastle. A further $421 million was spent with more than 200 suppliers across Sydney.

Chief Executive of Glencore Coal Assets Australia Peter Sharpe said the figures demonstrated the breadth of coal mining’s economic reach.

“Last year, we directly spent $2.5 billion on goods and services from businesses in regional NSW,” he said.

“The economic benefits of coal mining extend beyond the regions and into one of Australia’s largest capital cities as well.”

Glencore describes itself as one of Australia’s largest producers of coal and critical minerals, with 16 active mining operations and seven metals processing assets across the country. In NSW, the company says it supports a range of community organisations including the John Hunter Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Lifeline, Aussie Ark and Ungooroo Aboriginal Corporation.
