The Federal Government has finalised a funding agreement to develop master plans for two major mine sites in the Hunter region, supporting an election promise around the long-term transition planning for local communities.
The initiative, supported by the Net Zero Economy Authority and in-kind assistance from the New South Wales Government, will focus on BHP’s Mt Arthur site at Muswellbrook and Glencore’s Macquarie Coal site near Lake Macquarie.
The $5 million investment is intended to help prepare the Hunter for future economic opportunities as parts of the coal sector move toward planned closures. The Government says the work aims to ensure former mining land can be repurposed into productive, sustainable sites that create new jobs and attract investment.
Local leaders and regional organisations have long advocated for structured planning around mine rehabilitation and future land use. The Government says the master plans will reflect local priorities and provide clear pathways for industries and developments that could support economic diversification.

“For a decade under the Coalition, coal-fired power stations and mining sites announced closures and they did nothing,” said Tim Ayres, Minster for Industry and Innovation & Minister for Science.
“This funding changes that. It ensures investment is ready to flow and helps the Hunter prepare for its next chapter.
“This funding is about more than planning- it’s about delivering a future for the Hunter that works for people, business, and the environment.
“Repurposing these sites will unlock new opportunities and ensure the region remains a powerhouse for generations to come.”
With some mines approaching closure, the Albanese and Minns Governments say the work will ensure the Hunter is ready for the next chapter. The planning process will examine options that could support innovation, new industries and long-term community benefit.

“Muswellbrook has powered the state and the country for generations, and we’re determined to stay at the heart of the Hunter’s economic future,” said Muswellbrook Shire Mayor Jeff Drayton.
“This funding gives certainty to plan properly, take action on the record industrial closure Muswellbrook is facing, and make sure our community isn’t left waiting for action that should’ve happened years ago.
“Muswellbrook is at the cutting edge of mining land use. The work now is to turn planning into the projects, jobs and investment our Shire deserves.
“The Mt Arthur pilot project is a priority for Muswellbrook and we’ll waste no time putting this welcome Federal support into planning that future.”
The master plans form part of broader transition initiatives designed to help build a resilient and diversified regional economy. The Government says early planning is essential to lay the groundwork for secure jobs and strong communities in the decades ahead.
