The Dartbrook coal mine has been granted a further six‑year extension, securing operations through to 2033 following approval of Modification 8. The proposal had been on public exhibition, attracting 11 submissions, seven of which objected.

Muswellbrook Council says its support was based on ensuring strict environmental requirements were met and that the mine would deliver clear benefits for the local community. Mayor Jeff Drayton said Council’s position centred on making sure the planning panel understood those priorities.

“It isn’t any use having an industry in your community if the community doesn’t benefit,” he said.

“That was the basis for the support that Muswellbrook Council will give.”

The mine’s future has been clouded by years of operational setbacks, including flooding, gas issues, worker fatalities and recent financial turmoil that left local businesses owed significant sums. Cr Drayton said meetings this week with the mine’s financiers had resolved most outstanding payment concerns.

“We’ve come a long way with Dartbrook in a short period of time,” he said.

“We’re comfortable now and confident, and we’ll be keen to work with any new owner to ensure this community continues to benefit.”

Council says the approval does not impact its current IPART application for a special rate variation.
