Police from across the country have paused today to honour fallen colleagues for National Police Remembrance Day, a day set aside each year to remember officers whose lives have been cut short in the line of duty, as well as those who have died through illness or other circumstances.
This year’s service carries particular significance following the death of Constable Mia Lay, who was killed in a crash at Redfern last week. Constable Lay had served with the NSW Police Force for just 16 months, based at South Sydney Police Area Command. Premier Minns said being a police officer was one of the hardest jobs in the state.
“You start a shift not knowing what you are going to face, and we ask these young men and women to put themselves in harm’s way to keep the rest of us safe,” he said.
Locally, the Hunter Valley Police District will hold commemorations in Newcastle today. It starts at the Sacred Heart Cathedral, Newcastle West at 9:30am.
