The man who threatened himself, police and others, closed the New England Highway for 13 hours, and live streamed the chaos to Facebook has been sentenced to two years behind bars.
Steven Timothy Fairhall, 42, appeared in Muswellbrook Local Court on Monday, where Magistrate Hockey handed down the sentence. Fairhall will serve a non-parole period of 14 months, making him eligible for release in September this year. His full sentence ends on July 30, 2027.
The incident unfolded in July last year when police entered a property in Murrurundi. Fairhall removed a samurai sword from its sheath, held the blade to his chest, and told officers to leave or he would die. He then barricaded himself inside, forcing the closure of the New England Highway for public safety.
After 13 hours, Fairhall walked outside and was tasered before being arrested.
He also has previous domestic violence offences involving two former partners.
