The Muswellbrook community has been granted a half-day public holiday to celebrate the annual Mayor’s Cup Race Day, which will coincide with the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday, November 4, 2025.

The announcement was made by the Muswellbrook Shire Council after it received official approval from the NSW Minister for Industrial Relations, Sophie Cotsis MP. The public holiday will run from 12:00pm to 6:00pm and will apply to the entire Muswellbrook Shire Local Government Area.

The decision was formalised at an Ordinary Council meeting in April, where the council resolved to apply for the half-day holiday. The move is a significant win for the community, with the council stating that the event is a “significant occasion” that continues to receive “strong support from industry within the Shire.”
