Maitland, Cessnock and Singleton councils are getting in line with the state government initiative to go green, launching a FOGO service from next week.

It’s part of a coordinated Food Organics and Garden Organics collection service across the region, with weekly green bin collections set to commence on June 30.

The scheme is designed to direct compostable waste away from landfill.

Singleton Mayor Sue Moore said the Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) system was designed with simplicity in mind.

“Households have received a kitchen caddy and compostable liners make it easier for people to collect food scraps as they go,” said Cr Moore.

“Empty your caddy, liner and all, into your green bin every few days then put it out for collection weekly from 30 June.

“We’re here to support our communities through this transition, and there’ll be ongoing education and information to help everyone make the most of FOGO.”

A public education campaign is currently underway to help residents familiarise themselves with the FOGO scheme.
