A driver is lucky to have escaped injury after rolling his car at high speed on the Hunter Expressway.

Hunter Valley Police District officers saw a vehicle travelling in the Weston area last Thursday night, the driver of which was disqualified at the time. 

When the 28-year-old sighted police he accelerated away allegedly reached speeds of up to 200km/hr in a 60km/hr zone.

Police didn't attempt to pursue the driver and before too long they caught up with him 10 minutes later when the he collided with the roundabout at the intersection of Main Road and the Hunter Expressway at Heddon Greta.

The vehicle had rolled numerous times and left debris in its path across the roadway.

The driver was luckily able to crawl out of the vehicle relatively unharmed.

He was arrested and taken to Cessnock Police Station where he was charged with the driving offences, resulting in his bail being refused.
