COVID-19 cases almost hit a thousand in Hunter New England

The Hunter New England regions were just shy of seeing a thousand new cases of COVID-19 recorded in a single day.

There were 976 new infections identified overnight, which included a further 24 cases in the Upper Hunter regions.

Another 10 cases were diagnosed in Singleton, eight in Muswellbrook and six in the Upper Hunter Shire local government areas.

There are 6507 active cases in the district with 14 receiving care in hospital and two who are in ICU.

New South Wales recorded their highest daily cases since the very beginning of the pandemic with 5,712 locally acquired cases of COVID-19.

A breakdown of today's figures:

- 338 are from Newcastle LGA

- 316 are from Lake Macquarie LGA

- 142 are from Maitland LGA

- 61 are from Port Stephens LGA

- 42 are from Cessnock LGA

- 20 are from Mid Coast LGA

- 10 are from Singleton LGA

- 10 are from Tamworth Regional LGA

- 9 are from Moree Plains LGA

- 8 are from Muswellbrook LGA

- 6 are from Upper Hunter LGA

- 5 are from Dungog LGA

- 1 is from Narrabri LGA

- 1 is from Liverpool Plains LGA

- 1 is from Armidale LGA

- 1 is from Uralla LGA
