A man and woman has been charged after allegedly street racing on a major Hunter motorway.
Police were patrolling the New England Highway at Belford before midnight yesterday when they observed a red Subaru WRX and a silver Ford Falcon driving southbound at 60 kilometres over the speed limit.
Officers from the Newcastle-Hunter Sector Traffic & Highway Patrol activated all warning lights and the vehicles continued southbound side-by-side allegedly at speeds of more than 170km/hr in a sign-posted 110km/hr zone.
The vehicles continued for about one kilometre before stopping and speaking with police.
A 23-year-old female driver of the Subaru and a 55-year-old male driver of the Ford were both issued with Field Court Attendance Notices for the offence of organise, promote etc race between vehicles.
Both are due to face Singleton Local Court in November.
