Hunter football club rallies together for a worthwhile cause

Hamilton Azzurri Football Club did not let the current stay-at-home orders stop them for rallying together to raise donations for a worthy cause over the weekend.

Members from the men and women teams donned their light-blue jerseys and stepped up to a social media challenge called #moveforlex which inspires others to "get out, get moving and do it for those who can't."

"I was scrolling on Instagram and came across the movement," Hamilton's event organiser and player Kate Kaufmann said.

"I started thinking about how we could get our community of our soccer team back together with restrictions around."

The national campaign started to raise the spirit for triathlete Alexa Leary who was involved in a near-fatal cycling incident in July this year.

The accident resulted with a traumatic brain injury and left her with significant memory loss and a lack of mobility on her right side.

Azzurri participants set the challenge to walk, run, hike, cycle and move for five kilometres within their local government areas, adhering to the lockdown restrictions.

To take part in the movement was a 10 dollar buy-in but for every kilometre gained after the initial five, an additional ten dollars was donated.

"We had some people raise over a hundred each just from them. They walked 15 or 16 kilometres," Miss Kaufmann said.

Over the weekend, Hamilton raised over 1500 dollars with donations still incoming and being counted to their overall tally.

Although the campaign is aimed for Alexa, the funds will be donated to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital.

"We contacted the family through Instagram to reach out and ask what we could do.

"They said they weren't taking any donations but if we wanted to raise money all the donations are going towards the hospital.

"The family said if there is anything we can do to give back, it's giving back to the hospital for all that the hospital has done for them," Miss Kaufmann said.

The initiative had Azzurri members participate from the Lower Hunter right up towards Denman in the Upper Hunter.
