Fire and Rescue New South Wales is continuing to experience staff shortages in the Upper Hunter, putting pressure on existing staff and carrying the potential to put communities at risk.
The stations at Merriwa and Murrurundi are again the targets of a recruitment drive, seeking locally-based on-call firefighters who will work a part-time roster of shifts.
Anyone with a reasonable degree of fitness and daytime availability is encouraged to make an application.
Dayna Hynes, recruitment project officer and firefighter, says stay-at-home parents with family support make ideal candidates, as the part-time hours and no requirement to be on station outside calls provides flexibility.
“If a call comes in and I’ve got family support, I can go and drop the kids off and attend to the call – and then I just come back and continue doing whatever activities I was doing before.”
