Airport upgrade set to unlock the Upper Hunter

Tourists from around the world will begin landing at Newcastle Airport’s new International Terminal from this August.

The global connection is set to stimulate the tourism industry for the city, with the tourist dollar expected to flow right up the valley to Muswellbrook.

Mayors from across the Hunter Joint Organisation recognise the importance of the expansion to the airport, as a conduit to the region’s ongoing economic transformation.

The mayors are also pushing for a freight precinct to be included in the upgrades and say they are rallying every level of government to secure backing.

Speaking as part of the council collective Muswellbrook Mayor, Jeff Drayton says the development of a cargo terminal will provide significant export opportunities.

‘With the changes councils have moving away from those traditional industries,’

‘there’s about five hundred million dollars a year that goes through Brisbane and Melbourne cargo terminals that comes from NSW.’
